Optimising Diabetes Care: A strategic health strategy for the National Diabetes Services Scheme

THE CHALLENGE

In Australia, diabetes is a pressing health concern, affecting 1 in 20 Australians and representing a significant portion of the country’s disease burden. Type 1, Type 2 and gestational diabetes demand innovative solutions to ensure the well-being of those living with the condition. Recognising the urgency of this issue, our team at Evohealth partnered with Diabetes Australia to develop a comprehensive strategy aimed at delivering innovative and fit-for-purpose solutions within the National Diabetes Services Scheme (NDSS).

OUR APPROACH:

Recognising the complexity of the diabetes landscape, our approach to developing a strategic plan for the NDSS was comprehensive and collaborative, including several key steps:

1. Rapid Document Review: We conducted a rapid review of existing documents, resources, and the evidence base for the delivery of best practice diabetes self-management services and resources. This allowed us to identify existing strengths and areas for improvement within the NDSS framework.
2. Gap Analysis: Building upon the rapid document review, we conducted a comprehensive gap analysis to identify critical missing data or evidence in existing information pertaining to best practice self-management services. This analysis provided valuable insights into areas requiring further development or enhancement.
3. Strategy Co-Design: We facilitated a series of collaborative co-design sessions with key members of Diabetes Australia over three days. These sessions allowed us to harness the collective expertise and insights of stakeholders, ensuring that the resulting strategy was informed by diverse perspectives and aligned with stakeholder priorities.
4. Future State Strategy Document: Based on the outcomes of the rapid document review, gap analysis, and co-design sessions, we developed a future state strategy document. This document clearly articulates the needs, wants, and key activities for the future NDSS, providing a roadmap for driving innovation and improvement within the scheme.

THE OUTCOME

Through our collaborative efforts, we successfully co-designed a comprehensive strategy poised to guide innovation and evolution within the NDSS. Our strategy encompasses a range of initiatives aimed at enhancing healthcare access, improving service delivery, and empowering individuals living with diabetes to manage their condition effectively.
